Perfectly mainstream, perfectly wrong

Greg Sheridan tries to justify his erstwhile support for the Iraq war on the grounds that his belief in the existence of WMD was “perfectly mainstream”, and quotes a few Australian politicians as evidence of this (“On the receiving end of some nasty and wilful misrepresentation”, 17/9). It isn’t surprising that he ignored the Left’s ample warnings to the contrary, but he could perhaps have taken the finding of the U.N. weapons inspectors into account.

And he’s also ignoring those oh, 1/2 million Australians who took to the street on Valentines Day in ’03; in a pop of 23 mill, that sort of turnout to street protests definitely includes a vast amount of ‘mainstream’ public opinion.
