Why does The Australian seize on the unsubstantiated opinion of a single 22-year-old refugee that the High Court decision means “within weeks there would be loads and loads of people arriving in Australia”, (“Gillard adrift as solution founders”, 2/9), while ignoring the well-documented facts on refugee movements? They reflect global events, not Australian government policy. For example, the reduction in boat numbers during Howard’s term occurred before the introduction of TVPs, and there was no policy change to explain this year’s halving. It is a tug-of-war between an elephant and a mouse. Our cruelty to the tiny percentage of refugees who arrive here is needless.
