Same but different

If, as The Australian claims, “[i]t is wrong to assume that those who object to boatpeople are doing so on grounds of race” (“Rational argument is the only response to Norway”, 1/8), can they please explain the difference between the public attitude to the Sri Lankan, Afghan, and Middle Eastern refugees of recent times, and that shown after the Balkan wars, when the Howard government was forced by public pressure to accept thousands of white refugees, many of them Muslims?
