One-man paying public

The Australian’s editorial (“Technology is no excuse to restrict the free press”, 15/9) ascribes to not-for-profit media an “inherent weakness: their limited accountability to the paying public”. Presumably they include themselves in this category, as The Australian is not profitable in its own right. Why Rupert Murdoch chooses to subsidise it is mysterious, given their insistence that this one-man “paying public” exerts no editorial control.
