Only nine months ago, responding to accusations of running a campaign against the Greens, The Australian did not deny it: “We believe [Bob Brown] and his Green colleagues are hypocrites; that they are bad for the nation; and that they should be destroyed at the ballot box.”

It is heartening that they have now begun to accept the party as a legitimate expression of the people’s will – 15% and rising, despite the downward application of News Ltd’s considerable resources – and have even offered them some apparently sincere free advice (“Purity or political clout?”, 17/6). Don’t be surprised, however, if the Greens choose not to drink from that chalice!
