Those who lack objectivity invariably believe themselves to occupy “the centre”. This is why curmudgeons mistake their own grumpiness for increasing irritations in the rest of the world. It also may explain your assertion that “the ALP has lurched to the Left” (“Labor’s answers are in the suburbs, not the structures”, The Australian, 15/6).
In fact, Labor has made the mistake of pandering to a rightward lunge by sections of the media, who claim to speak for a chimerical “Middle Australia”, and who enforce a new political correctness whereby, for example, we may not name the xenophobia behind anti-refugee sentiments, or the ignorance behind climate change denial, which are marketed as the “legitimate concerns” of “mainstream Australians”. No they’re not. Labor will only regain its footing by realizing that good policy is not made by taking a survey.
