Do your own dishes

Writing in The Australian (17/6), Henry Ergas labours under a pre-carbon conception of what constitutes efficiency, assuming that under an ETS “more efficient ways of producing are replaced by less efficient alternatives”. It may be be more “efficient” from each individual producer’s point of view not to clean up after themselves, but someone has to do it eventually. Making polluters pay for their own mess gives them an incentive not to make one. Overall efficiency is increased.
