Slick and dodgy

The title of Greg Sheridan’s “A slick and dodgy sleight of hand” (The Australian, 7/6) could more appropriately be applied to the the graph which accompanied it.

Purporting to correlate changes in boat arrival numbers with the introduction and abolition of the chillingly-named “Pacific solution”, the graph does nothing of the sort: it shows boat arrivals increasing when TVPs were introduced, it shows them decreasing right now; more importantly, it does not show the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, or the outbreak of war in Sri Lanka in 2006, and so on.

Does Sheridan believe there are people sitting in bombed-out buildings and third-world camps poring over copies of Hansard in order to perfectly time their run for the border?
