The death of the old “political correctness”, which proscribed racism, has occasioned the rise of a new one, under which we may not use that word but must speak reverently instead of “the legitimate concerns of ordinary Australians”.

Refugee Resettlement Advisory Committee chair Bruce Baird is a rare truthful voice when he says current mainstream opinion on refugees “shows a lack of compassion…responding to pressure from the opposition and the quick political fix, rather than educating the community [on] our international obligation” (“Labor ‘follows Howard’s footsteps'”, The Australian, 7/5).

By calling both parties on their weasel words, the former Howard government MP has put the emphasis back on remedying ignorance rather than pandering to it.
