Pissants

It seem Gary Johns is a little oversensitive to criticism, if his petulant declaration of war against the rest of the world (“European pissants, humbug hypocrisy”, The Australian, 9/6) is his reaction to couple of home truths about how other countries see Australia’s world-beating cruelty to refugees and per-capita pollution.

When everyone thinks you’re wrong, there are two possibilities: you are wrong, or you are an unrecognised genius. Johns’ chest-beating hissy-fit shows little sign of the latter.

Fortunately he does not, as he pretends, speak for most Australians, who eschew this outdated, parochial, rugged individualism, and realise that tackling global problems like pollution and the mass displacement of people require international cooperation.
